Community Organization Spotlight: PURE

Pure Education Initiative, Inc.

September 10, 2019

ABOUT PURE

Pure is an initiative inspired by the result of so many young lives  being shattered by broken relationships, broken hearts, broken bodies  and crisis pregnancies. It is the organization's desire and vision to transform Southern Indiana communities by creating a culture that embraces sexual integrity and respect for life in all relationships.

Founded in 2012, Pure carries out an excellent strategy of placing a cadre of 30 trained, screened instructors and assistants (all volunteers!) in classroom and youth organizations, reaching an average of 5,000 students a year. Some of the volunteers are former educators and others have medical backgrounds.

Pure's curriculum and approach teach students that they are responsible  for their own behavior and have the power to control their choices. The results are greater self-esteem and self-worth, instilling confidence in  young people to make healthy decisions. Pure presents the public health model that addresses whole person -- physical, emotional, mental, and  social -- while meeting state educational health standards that are documented, medically accurate, and research-based.

When students hear repeatedly that they are empowered to make healthier choices regarding their sexual decisions, it can directly impact dropout rates from teen pregnancy, decrease depression that can lead to teen suicide, and decrease the number of victims of dating abuse and rape.

SOLUTIONS

Pure's newest pilot program, Solutions, is currently being presented in all Greater Clark County elementary schools this school year. Solutions consists of a parent night, two days of classroom instruction, and continued support for educators and parents. This program focuses on empowering children with a voice,  educating them with a clear understanding of healthy and unhealthy behaviors, and equipping them to keep themselves safe from these types of behaviors. All material is compliant with Indiana State Standards and is age appropriate.
