It is an exciting time in the history of the library! Effective November 1, 2019 the Jeffersonville Township Public Library is going fine free to ensure that members of our community have increased access to the library's materials and resources.
Studies have shown that late fines can be a significant barrier and drive borrowers away. The desire to prevent this has led to the current trend for many public libraries to go fine free. By approving the Fine Free policy the Board of Trustees hopes to bring patrons back to the library and attract new users to utilize the resources and services the library offers. The Board is pleased to join our neighboring libraries who are fine free.
Starting this month all unpaid fines for overdue materials will be forgiven. Jeffersonville Township Public Library cardholders who were prohibited from checking out materials due to unpaid fines will once again be able to check out library materials. “No overdue fines” does not mean “no responsibility.” Patrons will still be expected to return library materials on time as checkout periods will remain the same.
It is important to distinguish the difference between a fine and a fee. Fines accrue when an item is returned late. Fees are for lost or damaged materials, collection agency referrals, and products such as replacement library cards. Patrons are still responsible for fees on their library accounts.
“At the end of the day, we want to get as many library materials into the hands of as many patrons as possible,“ said Acting Director, Lori Morgan. “This is a proud moment for all of us at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library as we continue to look for better ways to serve our community and show our appreciation for their ongoing support.”
