At Mory & Colliersmith, PLLC, we’re not just personal injury lawyers. We’re also parents, neighbors, and community members who know how quickly a fun day can take a scary turn. That’s why we want to help families understand one of the most common causes of childhood injuries: slips, trips, and falls.
From playground tumbles to wet grocery store floors, falls can happen almost anywhere. And while many result in scrapes and bruises, some can lead to broken bones, head injuries, or long-term consequences.
Know Where Falls Commonly Happen
- Playgrounds: Uneven mulch, slippery slides, or overcrowded equipment can lead to accidents.
- Sidewalks and Driveways: Cracked or uneven concrete, loose gravel, or icy patches are dangerous, especially for toddlers.
- Stores and Restaurants: Spilled drinks or freshly mopped floors without warning signs are a common culprit.
- Schools and Daycares: While safety is a priority, understaffed or poorly maintained facilities can increase fall risk.

Prevention Starts at Home (and School)
As parents, you can help your child avoid unnecessary injuries by:
- Teaching them to walk (not run!) in stores and public places
- Making sure they wear the right shoes for play
The Right Features for Play Shoes:
- Flexible Soles – Let kids feel the ground and move naturally. Rigid soles can make tripping more likely.
- Closed-Toe Design – Protects little toes from stubbed injuries, splinters, and unexpected objects.
- Grippy Outsoles – Rubber with good tread helps prevent slipping,
- especially on slick playground surfaces.
- Wide Toe Box – Gives toes room to spread for better balance and fewer falls.
- No Elevated Heels – Keep feet flat for proper alignment and stability (even tiny heels can affect posture).
- Secure Fit - Velcro or laces that hold the foot snugly—loose shoes are tripping hazards.
- Choosing playgrounds with softer ground coverings (like rubber mulch or turf)
- Reporting unsafe conditions to staff or management

When Is a Fall More Than Just an Accident?
Sometimes, falls aren’t just "accidents." If a business, school, or property owner didn’t take proper precautions to keep their space safe, they may be responsible. That’s where we come in.
We help families figure out if:
- Warning signs should have been posted
- Repairs were overdue
- The equipment was broken or poorly maintained
- Staff were not properly supervising
What To Do If Your Child Gets Hurt
1. Seek medical attention right away, even if the injury seems minor.
2. Take pictures of the area where the fall happened.
3. Get witness information, if possible.
4. Report the incident to whoever is in charge (store manager, school director, etc.).
5. Call us. We’ll help you understand your legal options.
We know that nothing is more important than your child’s safety. And when an injury could have been prevented, you deserve answers.
If your child has been hurt in a slip, trip, or fall, reach out to us at Mory & Colliersmith. We’ll walk you through what happened, explain your rights, and treat your family like our own.
Stay safe, Louisville families!
